What does a UCS change describe?
Autodesk's 31 January 2023 guide demonstrates changing the user coordinate system's origin and orientation to suit drawing work. This is a coordinate reference for working in the drawing, not independent evidence that the project's physical equipment moved.
DWG Conversion is independent and is not affiliated with Autodesk. This worksheet addresses coordinate interpretation in controlled electrical CAD handover. It does not define survey control, a map projection or an approved plant relocation.

Which reference fields should a coordinate comparison retain?
Identify the same control point in both received and outgoing files. Record the actual frame used by each coordinate readout or export, including the origin, axis orientation and unit. A view rotation alone is not a complete definition of an export's coordinate basis.
| Field | Evidence | Review action |
|---|---|---|
| Point identity | Stable point or approved datum reference | Ensure both records describe the same point |
| Coordinate frame | WCS or the actual named UCS | Preserve the frame definition |
| Origin and axes | Offset, orientation and any elevation basis | Do not assume matching origins |
| Units | Actual drawing and export units | Check separately from frame |
| Comparison | Coordinates expressed in the approved common frame | Use a verified transformation |
| Disposition | Source file revision and reviewer | Separate reference change from geometry change |
How can different values describe an unchanged point?
Illustrative example. In an invented two-dimensional drawing, both frames use millimeters and their axes are parallel with the same direction. The UCS origin is at WCS coordinates (1000, 2000). A point at WCS (1200, 2300) is therefore at UCS (200, 300). Its position has not changed.
The calculation subtracts the stated origin offset only because this example has no rotation, scaling or elevation difference. It is not a universal conversion recipe. For a rotated frame or an inserted reference, retain and verify the full applicable transformation rather than subtract coordinates blindly.
What should the migration reviewer avoid?
Do not move all entities to the origin merely to make two coordinate lists agree. That can disturb established project references. Check the agreed handover frame and compare control points in that frame before authorizing any geometry edit.
If coordinates still differ after the reference basis is reconciled, preserve the before-and-after files and raise a specific discrepancy. Engineering sign-off is performed only by the registered engineer on the job. A matching point list does not certify the complete design.
Common questions
What else should the bid team know?
Do different coordinate values always mean the point moved?
No. First reconcile the frames, units and point identity.
Can origin subtraction handle a rotated UCS?
Not by itself. Verify the full transformation.
Should a received drawing be moved to zero automatically?
No. Follow the approved project coordinate and handover basis.
